About the Role
American Geospatial does precision cemetery mapping, sub-surface exploration, and cemetery archaeology — work that combines field survey, GIS, and archival research to document sites that matter to the communities around them. We're looking for a part-time GIS Intern to support our field and office teams as project work comes in.
You'll get hands-on exposure to the full workflow: collecting field data, processing it into usable maps and records, and seeing how that work supports real cemeteries, municipalities, and institutions.
What You'll Do
- Assist with field data collection — drone imagery, GPS points, headstone and site photography.
- Georeference and digitize plot maps, boundaries, and site features in GIS software.
- Help process and organize field data, survey records, and archival documents.
- Support senior staff during geophysical surveys (GPR, magnetometry) and archaeological fieldwork as needed.
- Assist with archival research — historical plot records, deeds, and cemetery documentation.
- Help prepare maps, figures, and records for client deliverables.
What We're Looking For
- Coursework or a degree in progress in GIS, geography, archaeology, geospatial science, or a related field.
- Familiarity with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar).
- Comfort working outdoors in cemetery field settings, including some physical activity.
- Attention to detail — this work becomes part of the permanent record for a site.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a small field team.
- A valid driver's license for travel to project sites.
What We Offer
- Part-time, flexible hours built around your school schedule.
- Direct, hands-on experience with GIS, remote sensing, and field survey methods.
- Mentorship from a Registered Professional Archaeologist and Geospatial Scientist.
- Compensation commensurate with experience.
- Exposure to significant, real-world projects in cemetery preservation and historical documentation.
